The game of cricket

Eleven players a side, one bat, one ball and a 22-yard pitch — a game of patience, skill and nerve. Every ball can change the match.

A short history

Cricket began in the fields of south-east England, with the earliest known mention in 1597. Its first written Laws were drawn up in 1744.

The Marylebone Cricket Club, founded in 1787, became keeper of the Laws. The first Test match was played in Melbourne in 1877, and the first World Cup in 1975.

Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996. Today cricket is followed by billions — from Tests and one-dayers to T20 nights in packed stadiums.
